Overdetermination : Contingency in History
Overdetermination is when something in history is described in such a way as to forget contingency; systems over individuals. It is an easy concept to grasp, but with immense implications for how historians write history, proving yet another thing that requires subjectivity

US-Mexico Border 🇺🇸🇲🇽 History you should know

The border between the United States and Mexico is an incredibly contentious subject. It is an unending controversy. But learning some history may alleviate that issue, at least a modicum. Our two countries are connected, but separate. There has never been an all-encompassing nor correct perspective on the matter. For most of its existence, tension and cohesion has defined relations, governance...

The Armenian Genocide, its precedence, and denial

The Armenian Genocide took place between 1915-1918, but it had a long history leading up to it. After decades of ethnic warfare, Young Turks (ordered by the three pashas of the CUP party) systematically murdered 2-3 million Christians of Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek dissent during World War I. Turkey then instituted denial of this event, which continues to this day. Such ignorance will not be ...

What even is a moral panic? It's essentially fear-mongering and conspiracism about a supposed cultural threat that's ultimately overblown or outright false. The northern democrats.... This has made me wonder, if Tennessee didn't vote for the democrat in the 1860 election, were the founders in Pulaski really democrats? I would be interested in the party changes leading up to the civil war and where those people ended up. Were party changes more prevalent in the south as opposed to the north?

We've all participated in the experience of empire, be it with resistance or as an apologost, as an occupier or occupied, and so on.. We are all actively participating in what will be history if humanity doesn't boil the planet and/or our own future as existing life forms. Therefore there all historians are observant participants to a degree. It's just a matter of their levels of either throughout. I think this also brushes up to the agency in history video of yours i just watched, to which I say, maybe more observations would have been beneficial to improving the (enormous) gaps within the critical thinking skills of those heavily participating in making all of those stupidity lead decisions resulting in destruction, death, and other western empire fuckery. Thanks for all you do to help those of us on our search for a more nuanced less dichotomously eurocentric look at political history.

I think we have to acknowledge that it is *impossible* to know what JFK would have done had he lived. Yes, you can blame him for some initial involvement, but saying he would have escalated things in the same way LBJ did is pure speculation. It's also noting that Kennedy's brother, who was his attorney general, later ran for President as an anti-war candidate.

As our species tends to do, even sometimes for good reasons, in the 1950s, the then divided power market-dominant West & unified-power state dominant Communist polities were contending worldwide, tho the most populous arena was SE & S Asia, in particular Indonesia & India. That contest was tilted capitalist by a major, mass murderous, & successful military coup, toppling a heavily Communist sympathetic, civilian republic in 1965. Apparently, US Indochina involvement had begun as a backstop, 2ndy to Indonesia,m; & had JFK goitten a 2nd term or RFK a 1st, might have led to an agreement like the one that the Kennedy Bris had made to avoided Nuclear War over Cuba in 1962. However, LBJ followed by Nixon, tried to push their advantage deeper into Asia with mixed results. While, Indo-China stayed Red or State-Capitalist, India an even bigger Market prize, tetering between state & corporate rule moved toward markets, & then China's state rulers vastly grew its economic power while retaining political command. There's much more to say, but this seems a fair, if initial & partial, thumbnail outline...

Race is indeed a ridiculous social construct & equally ridiculous, are man made borders being created historically, to both separate & label varying European/global ethnic groups. RACISM....A serious "disease" of the human mind & one that must be dismantled & eliminated, as much as is humanly possible, even if not fully (as will never be fully conquered), but still, is worth our combined efforts, no matter the level of complexity & difficulty faced.

Don't know if it would be based on a true story but I once made a puppet show about historiography (with musical numbers) which compared agency, circumstance and a variety of overarching threads. Fact....ALL humans ancient ancestors originate from Africa, the cradle of human civilization, some 60,000 to 90,000 years ago & this has been both archaeologically & scientifically proven/verified & certainly according to current science. Variations in human skin shades/color, are adaptive traits/adaptive responses that correlate closely with geography and the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. As early humans moved into hot, open environments in search of food and water, one big challenge was keeping cool. By the time early humans arrived within Europe, new science clearly states, they still had "darker" skin shades & most had lighter eye shades, but not always. Eventually, their skin shades grew lighter, so that their skin could absorb more Vitamin D & why did this happen? Because within regions with wee sunshine, nature helped human skin & our human skin (our largest organ), had to develop a way, to make Vitamin D absorption more fluid/easy. A paler skin shade did just this. It was more readily able to absorb Vitamin D. This paler skin, decided by nature, had/has absolutely no bearing on "true" human & so called, racial superiority, as many so falsely perceive/believe. In much hotter & sunnier climates, ie: Africa, the opposite is true, albeit, even within Africa, there are many Africans with lighter or even pale skin shades. Ie: Specifically, within North African ethnic groups, specifically within African tribes & within those from South Africa & of "mixed" ethnicity, meaning, part African & part European. The genetic changes apparent in worldwide populations, include a "decrease" in both overall body size and brain size, as well as an obvious reduction in both jaw & tooth proportions. Regional populations have also evolved different physical & genetic characteristics, but, "only" in response to varying climates & lifestyles. Basically, there is a REAL science behind human skin shades & all human variances/physical characteristics. I think we should also note here, that we should NOT LABEL/BOX humans from varying continents & varying ethnic groups, as "all" being of the exact & same skin shade & why? Because within every continent, there are countless skin shades, from the very lightest to the very darkest & yes, this includes Europe too. For example, I have many friends from every continent & I see them. I know that not ALL Africans are simply "black" as almost always labelled within the US & not all peoples from other minority groups are to be labelled as brown or black, (not that there's anything wrong whatsoever with darker skin shades), but their skin shades vary greatly, from the palest to the darkest, from North, South, East & West. Even within the "same" ethnic group, you may well see "variances" in skin shades & most definitely, when looking @ very "ethnically diverse" populations globally. For eg: Many ethnically diverse peoples possess skin shades from the palest to a darker skin shade & also, there are many Asians, from South Asia, South & SE Asia, who are actually paler than many Europeans. There are many non-Europeans, or many non-fully Europeans, who possess much finer facial features too & this includes both full blooded ethnic groups globally & humans of mixed ethnicity. Also, NOT ALL Africans possess "thick & heavy" facial features, as so commonly believed. There are countless Caucasians too, who actually possess much thicker facial & nasal features. We see both refined & thicker facial features, within "every" single continent & not "only" within Europe/the Caucasus. On a personal note I must add, that I saw the most beautifully facial/bodily boned structures across Africa. True & natural beauty, is NOT just a Caucasian/European thing. I think of the beauty of countless, Ethiopian, Kenyan, Somali & Sudanese women/men within Africa. I travelled throughout Africa, Pakistan, the Middle East & French Polynesia & I met countless, beautifully faced & statuesque framed women & men. The African women have incredible facial bone structure & are so naturally beautiful, so for a global belief, that "only" Caucasian/European peoples are naturally beautiful is indeed, very flawed/untrue. Fact.... Mixed genes make for healthier humans, just as when cross breeding dogs. This makes for a healthier pet. It's a real wake up call when we go to Africa & we meet, face to face, such beautiful persons & we come to realise, that the Western peoples & media have been so very wrong, in their preferential treatment & judgement of humans, the one's who don't look like them. Finally, it's very interesting to note, that the "one drop rule" that existed/exists within the US, deems anyone with the tiniest amount of African ancestry, as "black", yet this sounds absurd, because it's not factually based & interestingly, doesn't exist within any other global country. For eg: A person of "mixed" ancestry who went to France & other European regions during segregation or even after, would not be deemed as "black" by locals & especially if their "mixed" skin shade was of a fairer complexion, thus, the individual could state what they wanted to say they were & that, was their absolute human right. They weren't "categorised, boxed & labelled" as countless were & are within the US.

The US, (as in all other Western countries), is laced with dark & painful stories & many "intentionally" hidden stories too. I personally think this is very shameful behaviour. It's a well known fact, that many will go to great lengths, to cover up/hide/deceive the public from knowing specific "truths", to suit their own personal narrative/s. And, to continue "promoting" their chosen/well worded mission statements, or whatever it is, that they're wanting to continually promote & spread, even when it's blatantly untrue. Your research is deep, your many findings are enlightening & for many from minority groups, is much appreciated. Finally, your wee pussy cat😺is so sweet & yes, cute! Gentle pats to the wee furry one. Thank you, for sharing & for always properly educating!

I think technology is a major driver of history. For instance, I think the internal combustion engine invented the automobile and the airplane. The early internal combustion engines produced about 1 hp per 100 lbs of engine. This was not good enough for anything other than stationary use or use in boats. But because those two purposes alone were sufficient to guarantee widespread use, the technology had the opportunity to advance. By the time the hp to weight ratio dropped into slightly more than 12 lbs per hp, automobiles became a real possibility along with crude airplanes. Likewise, I believe that improvements in steam technology made the showdown over slavery in the USA all but inevitable.

You do a good job of summarizing what's referred to as "vulgar Marxism" but not, imho, the way Marx actually wrote about history. Marx's materialist analysis is _precisely_ what you refer to in the very next bit about sociology, being about how _large groups_ (particularly socioeconomic classes) behave. The bit about "voters voting against their interests" is a line trotted out by shitlibs, _not_ Marxists. I wonder how one could have read _The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte_ and come away with this take on Marxist history.

Modern propaganda is less to bring in new believers and more to solidify the believers they already have. No democrat or leftist would take any of this seriously, but someone who's already been swayed by trump or the maga crowd this would be a sort of justification to not change their beliefs or behavior, actual facts be damned. Best comparison I can think of is putting off yard work. You would have to stop what you're doing, get up, and set aside a few hours to work out in the (ever warming) heat. Then you look at your phone and see that it's supposed to rain today. It doesn't matter that it's a 20% chance or it wouldn't start for another 5 hours, those are just inconvenient truths. Now you can put it off until tomorrow. (yes, I'm saying all republicans have political ADHD, fight me)

Not really related, but can I ask you this: is there any overlap between fascism and communism? I've heard its common for people to claim that the far-right in america is honestly closer to communism than the left is, despite their accusations. I thought though, that to be fair, perhaps there is some overlap between the two? They are both populist movements that originated around the game time. I tried to ask this on stack exchange a couple years back, but it got deleted for 'asking about current politics'. So, the history of fascism and communism is 'current events'? Wtf? Of course, I know team youtube probably won't let you make a video about that, but I still would like to know an answer to this. All you've said in a video about communism is that its not easily defined, which obviously doesn't help me much...

You don’t have to be a Marxist to recognize that some people "vote against their own best interest." Especially in the US, where one party's economic platform is to cut taxes for the wealthy in the hope that it "trickles down."
